Leonardos writings on paintingamong the most remarkable from any erawere never edited by Leonardo himself into a single coherent book. In this anthology the authors have edited material not only from his socalled Treatise on Painting butalso from his surviving manuscripts and from other primary sources, some of which were here translated for the first time. The resulting volume is an invaluable reference work for art historians as well as for anyone interested in the mind and methods of one of the worlds greatest creative geniuses.Highly readable. . . . Also included are documentary sources and letters illuminating Leonardos career; the manuscript sources for all of Leonardos statements are fully cited in the notes. The volume is skillfully translated and is illustrated with appropriate examples of drawings and paintings by the artist.ChoiceCertainly easier to read and . . . more convenient than previous compilations.Charles Hope, New York Review of BooksA chaotic assemblage of Leonardo da Vincis writings appeared in 1651 as Treatise on Painting.. . . I picked up 'On Painting' by Leonardo Da Vinci after seeing it recommended online, and I’m so glad I did! The anthology features a great selection of his writings, which really give insight into his genius. The quality of the print is excellent, making it a beautiful addition to my art collection.

Disappointed with the Condition
I ordered this anthology hoping for a pristine copy, but mine arrived with a damaged cover. It’s frustrating because the contents seem great but the packaging could’ve been better. I’d recommend checking the condition before accepting delivery.

Interesting, But Lacks Depth
While I appreciate the selection of documents related to Leonardo's career, I found some parts of the anthology a bit hard to get through. Maybe it’s just me, but I was hoping for more detailed commentary on his techniques. Still, it’s a fascinating read for anyone into art history.
