Leonhard Goppelt hat einen eigenstandigen Entwurf der Theologie des Neuen Testaments vorgelegt, der zu erheblich anderen Positionen kommt als das Werk Rudolf Bultmanns. Es ist in einem eigenstandigen Prozess entstanden, inhaltlich gepragt durch die Weiterfuhrung der heilsgeschichtlichen Erlanger Theologie Hofmanns, darin in groaer Nahe zum Werk Gerhard von Rads. Viele von Goppelts Positionen wie der gesamtbiblische Ansatz, die Einbeziehung von Wirken und Verkundigung Jesu in die Theologie des Neuen Testaments und eine positive Wurdigung der spaten Schriften des Neuen Testaments haben erst nach seinem Tod Anerkennung gefunden. Die aufgrund von Goppelts fruhem Tod in mancher Hinsicht nur fragmentarisch publizierte Theologie des Neuen Testaments wird durch die Darstellung seiner vorangehenden Forschungen zur Auslegung des Alten Testaments im Neuen und zur Geschichte des Urchristentums gewurdigt. Das gesamte Lebenswerk wird in seinen verschiedenen Entwicklungsstadien in die Theologiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts eingeordnet.
