Capturing the perfect wave: Tapping into the archives of Americas most important surf photographer of the 60s and 70s At a time when surfing is more popular than ever, its fitting to look back at the years that brought the sport into the mainstream. Developed by Hawaiian islanders over five centuries ago, surfing began to peak on the mainland in the 1950sbecoming not just a sport, but a way of life, admired and exported across the globe. One of the key imagemakers from that period is LeRoy Grannis, a surfer since 1931, who began photographing the scene in California and Hawaii in the longboard era of the early 1960s.This edition showcases Granniss most vibrant workfrom the bliss of catching the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic wipeouts at Oahus famed North Shore. An innovator in the field, Grannis suctioncupped a waterproof box to his board, enabling him to change film in the water and stay closer to the action than other photographers of the time. He also covered the emerging surf lifestyle, from surfer stomps and hoards of fans at surf contests to boardladen woody station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is in these iconic images that a sport still in its adolescence embodied the freespirited nature of an eraa time before shortboards and celebrity endorsements, when surfing was at its bronzed best. I recently picked up this collection of Leroy Grannis's surf photography from the 60s and 70s, and it's a fantastic trip back in time. The black-and-white images really capture the essence of that era and the surfing culture. I bought it as a gift for my brother, who's a huge surf fan, and he absolutely loved it!

Great Photos, But Some Pages Poorly Bound
The photos in this book are stunning and really showcase the spirit of surfing back in the day. However, I noticed a few pages were not well bound, which was a bit disappointing. It’s still worth it for the photos, but I expected better quality overall.

Not What I Expected
I had really high hopes for this photography book, but it fell flat for me. The reproduction quality isn’t great, and some of the images look dull. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was hoping for something more vibrant that captured the surf scene. Definitely not worth the price for me.
