En 1916, Thodore part pour le front Verdun. A son retour, endurci par les preuves et les combats impitoyables, il s'implique dans la lutte sociale. Puis, du, il quitte tout et part pour ClermontFerrand o il tente de raliser ses rves d'indpendance. Cependant, il ne peut oublier Marie, son premier et unique amour.
