Sous Louis xiv, on sattache volontiers aux notations, ces marques o se dcouvrent les passions et rien nintresse plus que les passions. Dun mot, l o nous avons pu croire que La Bruyre fixait des images, il semployait en vrit nous donner les lire. On ne sait en effet ce qui nous sollicite le plus : ce que regarde La Bruyre ou la manire dont il regarde.Cette uvre subtile et neuve appelait un soin tout particulier dans ltablissement du texte comme dans lannotation. Elle bnficie donc des progrs considrables accomplis dans ce domaine au cours des dernires dcennies dans la connaissance du classicisme.Edition dEmmanuel Bury.
