Il en analyse galement les arrireplans, qu'il s'agisse du legs nfaste laiss par le totalitarisme ou l'autoritarisme aux socits qui ont t leurs victimes, des carences frquentes de leurs traditions dmocratiques, ou encore des conditions adverses ou favorables la dmocratisation qui sont lies leurs spcificits sociales et culturelles autant qu' leur situation conomique.Guy Hermet est directeur de recherche la Fondation nationale des sciences politiques (CERI).
