Il y a dans Les Mystres de Paris une nergie sauvage : celle d une cohorte de personnages malfiques, malfrats hideux comme la Chouette, Tortillard un antiGavroche , le Matre d cole ou BrasRouge, criminels du grand monde comme le comte de SaintRemy, monstres hypocrites comme le notaire Jacques Ferrand. Eugne Sue n est pas avare de noirceur. Mais il y a aussi une sauvagerie du Bien, celle de Rodolphe, prince mlancolique venu Paris la recherche de sa fille perdue, impitoyable avec les mchants qu il punit au mpris des lois. On doit sa cruaut quelquesunes des scnes les plus stupfiantes du roman : le chtiment du Matre d cole, ou le supplice de luxure impos Jacques Ferrand. Cette cruaut contraste avec la puret morale de FleurdeMarie, comme avec la face solaire de Rodolphe, providence de tous les malheureux honntes dont il croise le chemin. Le roman exprime dans son ensemble une qute assoiffe de rgnration morale de la socit, par l amlioration des mcanismes prventifs et rpressifs (c est le sens de l engagement de Sue en faveur dans l encellulement des criminels) ainsi que par l invention de mcanismes d incitation au Bien, police ou tribunal de la Vertu, qui doivent rcompenser publiquement les actions exemplaires.
