Gilliat se rejeta en arrire, mais put peine remuer. Il tait comme clou. De sa main gauche reste libre il prit son couteau qu'il avait entre ses dents, et de cette main, tenant le couteau, s'arcbouta au rocher, avec un effort dsespr pour retirer son bras. Il ne russit qu' inquiter un peu la ligature, qui se resserra. Elle tait souple comme le cuir, solide comme l'acier, froide comme la nuit... Brusquement une large viscosit ronde et plate sortit de dessous la crevasse... On distinguait au ct oppos de ce disque immonde le commencement de trois autres tentacules, rests sous l'enfoncement du rocher. Au milieu de cette viscosit il y avait deux yeux qui regardaient.Ces yeux voyaient Gilliat.Gilliat reconnut la pieuvre.'
