Voyageant entre mmoire et histoire, qute personnelle et enqute historique, sources prives et archives inexplores, il reconstitue les trois exils qui ont marqu le destin des Juifs d'Algrie. En moins d'un sicle en effet, ils sont sortis par trois fois de ce qui tait jusquel leur univers familier. Il se sont loigns de la vie juive en terre d'islam quand le dcret Crmieux de 1870, faisant d'eux des citoyens franais, les a mis sur la voie de l'assimilation. Ils ont t rejets hors de la communaut franaise de 1940 1943 avec les lois de Vichy. Et ils ont quitt les rives algriennes avec l'exode de 1962. A travers cet essai historique sensible et rigoureux, enrichi de documents indits, on dcouvre l'originalit de ce judasme algrien la fois passionnment attach la Rpublique franaise et profondment ptri de traditions religieuses, mais aussi la complexit et les ambiguts des relations entre Juifs et Musulmans.
