Gellert wollte mit seinem Werk nicht nur unterhalten, sondern verfolgte auch pdagogische Absichten, die ich mit dieser Hausarbeit herausarbeiten mchte. Um dies zu gewhrleisten ist es unter anderem notwendig, die Begrndung formaler Aspekte im Handlungsstrang des Werkes wiederzufinden. Ich werde darber hinaus die fr Gellert geltenden Ideale anhand seiner moralischen Vorlesungen und Quellen anderer Autoren historisch und kritisch darstellen, um den Roman auf dieser Grundlage zu untersuchen. Weiterhin mchte ich die Charakteristika der Empfindsamkeit vorstellen, die die Grenze der tradierten Moralnormen im Gegensatz zur anschlieenden Strmung des Sturm und Drang noch nicht berschreiten. Im Mittelpunkt soll hierbei die Einheit von Herz und Vernunft und ihre Bewhrung stehen. Der Focus wird vorwiegend auf dem ersten Teil des Romans liegen, da die pdagogische Absicht in diesem wesentlich ausgeprgter ist. Auffallend ist auerdem, dass der Roman ber eine Haupt und zahlreiche Nebenhandlungen verfgt. Ich werde in der vorliegenden Arbeit zum einen untersuchen, was Gellert mit dieser groen Anzahl von handelnden Personen bezwecken wollte und welche Bedeutung den Sterbensszenen zukommt. Anhand ausgesuchter Episoden mchte ich anschlieend die spezielleren Absichten Gellerts darstellen und hierbei auch die Sichtweise eines heutigen Lesers einbeziehen.
