LIKE THE LIGHTNING focuses on an understanding of movements which are key to the spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola. Examples of such movements or developments are the one within a retreat day from more activity to less activity and from one within a prayer exercise from an objective to a subjective consideration e.g. from a consideration of sin in the world to a reflection on one's personal sinfulness. There are several interrelated elements of such movements. One example would be a correct understanding of repetitions; another would be the proper use of the prayerperiod examen. Father Fleming highlights dynamics a quality of movement implying power, Energy, flow, direction and integral to the Exercises. By such an emphasis he intends that we gain fresh insights and a greater understanding of God's dynamic activity, which is central to the experience of the exercises. There are three principal divisions in the book. The first part considers the major elements and themes that make up the movement of the exercises. The second part focuses on particular exercises that shape this flow. The third part, which we see how the various ignition regulars or 'rules' are best understood as guidelines within the context of these dynamics. David L Fleming, SJ is the author several books and the editor of the journal 'Review for Religions'.
