Now available for the first time in paperback, Lincoln and the Indians remains the only thorough treatment of a muchneglected aspect of Lincolns presidency. Placing Indian affairs in the broad context of Civil War politics and the settling of the West, David A. Nichols covers the Sioux War of 1862 in Minnesota, the forced removal of the Navahos from their homeland to the deadly concentration camp at Bosque Redondo, and the massacre of Cheyennes by volunteer troops at Sand Creek. He also examines Lincolns inept handling of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory and the corrupt Indian System of government aid that mainly benefitted ambitious whites.

I ordered this thinking it would be more narrative-driven, but it reads more like a textbook. The details are thorough, but the writing style made it hard to stay engaged. It’s informative, but I was hoping for more storytelling.

A Must-Read for History Lovers
This book does a great job exploring Lincoln’s complex relationships with Native Americans during a tumultuous time. The political analysis is sharp and thought-provoking. I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to understand this side of American history better!

Great Resource, Took a While to Arrive
The book is fantastic and full of insights, but it took longer to ship than I expected. I wasn't in a rush, but I can see how that might annoy some folks. Still, I’m glad I added this to my collection!

Interesting but somewhat dense
I found Lincoln and the Indians to be quite enlightening, but it got a bit heavy in some sections. The political context is rich, yet it's not the easiest read. Still, if you're interested in Civil War history, it has plenty of valuable insights.

A Deep Dive into Lincoln's Era
This book is a fascinating read about Lincoln's policies regarding Native Americans during the Civil War. The depth of research is impressive, and it really sheds light on an often overlooked aspect of his presidency. Definitely worth the read for history buffs!
