The second edition of this book is a comprehensive resource for preservice and in service teachers. The book will help you recognize and assess reading and writing problems and provide effective interventions to help every child succeed. It focuses on the major areas of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, word identification, comprehension of both narrative and expository text, vocabulary, fluency, and writing, including spelling. The author thoroughly explores each area, providing an overview of pertinent research, suggested methods and tools for diagnosis and assessment, intervention strategies and activities, and technology applications. The new edition offers increased focus on understanding the stages of literacy development of all English learners and helping them to become literate in English. Detailed information on designing checklists and rubrics based on state standards is included, sample checklists are provided throughout the relevant chapters, and Appendix C includes more than 50 additional assessment tools. Many of intervention activities are designed to be used with children s literature. Tools and visuals for creating and implementing many of the book s more than 150 intervention strategies and activities are included in Appendix D, and two additional appendices provide helpful resources, book lists, pronunciation guides, common word families, and frequently used suffixes and prefixes.
