Salinger und 'Moon Palace' (1989) von Paul Auster einander gegenbergestellt. Vorhandene Schnittstellen sollen beleuchtet und markante Unterschiede herausgearbeitet werden. Im Zentrum der Beobachtungen wird dabei die Initiationsthematik stehen. Als einer der elementarsten Bestandteile in beiden Romanen, verdient sie eine grndliche Analyse hinsichtlich der Anlage von Charakteren und Plot sowie des Kontextes von Erzhlstruktur und form. Die Initiation Story wird gemeinhin als eine Art Sonderform der Novels of Adolescence betrachtet. Dieser Begriff umfasst jene literarischen Texte, in denen Heranwachsende die Hauptrolle spielen. Der Lebensabschnitt der Jugend erfuhr mit Aufkommen der gefhlsbetonten Strmung der Empfindsamkeit Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts eine Neubewertung als eigenstndige Denk und Gefhlswelt, die sich auch auf die Literatur auswirkte. Peter Freese spricht von einem 'unaufhaltsamen Einzug' (Freese 1971, 15) jugendlicher Protagonisten in die amerikanische Literatur. Die Neubewertung brachte jedoch auch Schwierigkeiten mit sich: Betroffene fhlen sich weder der Kinder noch der Erwachsenenwelt zugehrig, woraus sich bei vielen ein individuelles schmerzhaftes Lebensgefhl entwickelt: Die Adoleszenzkrise. Der junge Mensch wird aus dem Zustand kindlicher Unwissenheit heraus erstmals mit den Gesetzen der Erwachsenenwelt konfrontiert. Fr einen solchen bergang von einem in den anderen Zustand, der einem Weg von der Unschuld zur Erfahrung gleichkommt, ist die Suche nach einem Platz in der Welt und gleichsam auch nach einer gefestigten Identitt grundlegend. Diese schwierige Phase des bergangs von der Adoleszenz ins Erwachsenendasein steht in 'The Catcher in the Rye' und in 'Moon Palace' im Mittelpunkt der Handlung. Daher gilt es
