Jahrhunderts. Es ist mit mehr als zwei Millionen Exemplaren in Deutschland, fnf Millionen in den USA und weiteren Millionen in Japan, sowie anderen Lndern verbreitet. Des Weiteren wurde es in alle Kultursprachen, darunter auch in zwlf indische Sprachen, bersetzt. Hermann Hesse ist einer der wenigen Autoren, die sich in ihren Werken des asiatischen Gedankenguts bedienen. Dabei stellt Hesse besonders im Siddhartha dar, dass diese andersartigen, exotischen Gedanken im Bereich der Spiritualitt und Mystik nicht nur territorial auf den asiatischen Raum beschrnkt sind, sondern sich ebenso auf andere Lnder bertragen lassen. Mit seiner indischen Dichtung zeigt der Schriftsteller, dass er in ihr auch den okzidentalen Bereich einflieen lsst, indem er westlich religise Akzente mit einsetzt. Aus diesem Grund soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit untersucht werden, in wie weit sich der Erzhler auf mystische bzw. religionsphilosophische Quellen bezieht und welche dabei am meisten zum Tragen kommen. Das Hauptinteresse liegt dabei auf Hermann Hesses dichterische Umsetzung dieser mystischen indischen Einflsse in seiner Erzhlung Siddhartha. Zunchst soll der allgemeine Begriff der Mystik kurz erlutert werden, der sich wie ein roter Faden durch die gesamte Arbeit zieht. Die Dichtung beschreibt den Lebensweg des Brahmanensohns Siddhartha, der durch alle Hhen und Tiefen des Daseins gehen muss, um schlielich sein Ziel zu erreichen. Dieser lebenslange und beschwerliche Weg durchluft eine Folge von symbolischen Wiedergeburten, Verwandlungen und Prfungen.
