English Translation of Book Synopsis: This study develops a cultural and psychological interpretation of humor in German literature and of its development from the 16th to the 18th century. In theoretical terms, it is indebted to Norbert Elias' concept of the process of civilization, and it is strongly influenced also by Freud, Bakhtin and Erich Auerbach. Contrasting Fischart's Geschichtklitterung (1590) and Lessings Nathan der Weise (1779), which is shown to be part of the comedy tradition, the spectrum of literary humor is explicated in historical as well as theoretical terms.About the AuthorDer Autor: Nach seiner Promotion im Fach Germanistik an der University of California unterrichtete Frank Schlossbauer an der Washington University in St. Louis und der Stanford University in Kalifornien.
