Il dirige galement la collection Controversies from the Promised Land. Wolfgang Freund was born in Germany in 1939. After years of research and teaching in Germany, France, North Africa, and the Middle East, he currently works at the Institut de Recherches et dEtudes sur la Communication, ParisII University. He was founder and editorinchief of the trilingual journal Die Dritte Welt. He is now the editor of the series Controversies from the Promised Land and codirector of the FrancoGermanPalestinian Research Center for Peace in the Middle East. These papers are the contributions to an international conference which had been organized in February 1997 by the Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies and Diplomacy (BenGurion University of the Negev, BeerSheva, Israel). Around a visionary topic academics and scholars from the Arab World, Europe, and Israel met together, during a period of ongoing conflictual events when, for the first time, high expectations in favour of true reconciliation between Arabs and Israelis were nevertheless on the agenda. The contributions do reveal a double function: each coauthor, of course, expresses something specific. The collection on the other hand is witnessing to an outstanding moment of exchange and friendship that had prevailed among all participants.
