Von New York ausgehend, ist das Leben in alten Fabrikgeschossetagen dann in den 70er Jahren auch nach Europa gekommen. In vielen Grostdten Europas, wo aufgrund der Industrialisierung groe Fabriken und Lagerhallen und so genannte Gewerbegeschossbauten entstanden, die nach und nach zu leer stehenden Gebuden wurden, zogen ebenfalls wie in New York Knstler, Lebensknstler und Studenten in diese zu Beginn illegalen Wohnmglichkeiten ein, um in diesen Rumen leben und arbeiten zu knnen, ohne hohe Mietpreise bezahlen zu mssen.
