From School Library Journal Grade 36Lolo Garcia, 11, has never left his neighborhood in Las Lomitas, in the hills of East Los Angeles, where he and his friends spend their summer riding bikes, working on their fort, and fighting endlessly among themselves and with enemies. When his grandfather helps him capture a giant spider near their fort, Lolo meets a local petstore owner who offers to exhibit the Mexican red leg tarantula in the Los Angeles County Fair and to take Lolo and his friends there. A girl he admires is impressed by his unusual pet, and his new teacher says it is the perfect subject for their fall science research project. All of these exciting possibilities appear to evaporate when the fort is raided and the tarantularium is smashed. Luckily, Lolo's pet survives and the boy manages to recapture her. The promised outing goes off as planned and school looks more agreeable, as well. A particular strength of this simple story is the warm relationship between Lolo and his abuelo. In addition, other caring adults offer advice and encouragement to support the boy's growth. Spanish words and phrases are used liberally in the dialogue and are translated in context and in a glossary. Both the physical and the cultural settings are depicted clearly and realistically, and the plot moves along swiftly enough to keep reluctant readers engaged. A gentle and surprisingly informative boyandhispet story.Kathleen Isaacs, Edmund Burke School, Washington, DCCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description When elevenyearold Lolo captures a tarantula, it turns an ordinary summer into a series of adventures that take him and his friends beyond their Mexican American neighborhood in East Los Angeles
