Mais les montagnards les pient. Peu peu, chez Mathieu, l'ide de la trahison, la folie de l'or, la joie qui coupe le souffle quand une ppite scintille dans le ruisseau, l'emportent sur tout le reste. Lorsque Toscan, un villageois qui avait perc leurs secrets, est cras sous une roche, Mathieu se demande : Etaitce un accident ? Kohl ne seraitil pas un fou, un tricheur ? Et cet or, d'o vientil ? Un cadeau de la montagne, vraiment, ou plutt une punition ? L'or ne nous rendraitil pas aveugles la vie ?
