Los Aborgenes de Gran Canaria llegaron con la conquista de la isla de Tenerife (14941496), con el objeto de conseguir tierras, agua y casa, algo que en su isla tenan vetado. Al menos en dos ocasiones (batalla de La Matanza y batalla de La Laguna) le salvaron la vida al conquistador de Las Islas de Tenerife y de La Palma, Alonso Fernndez de Lugo, y por este motivo contaban con su favor. Los aborgenes grancanarios generalmente se mantenan en la retaguardia de las batallas, como en la conocida Batalla de La Laguna, donde muri el Gran Rey de Taoro, el mencey Benitomo (Bencomo).
