Los cirujas no son una figura nueva dentro del espacio social, sino que se han ido configurando junto con los procesos de transformacin social, econmica y poltica que se sucedieron en Argentina durante dcadas. En los ltimos aos se multiplicaron los estudios en las ciencias sociales que abordan diversos aspectos del fenmeno. Este trabajo describe las prcticas colectivas e individuales de recuperacin de residuos en la ciudad de Villa Mara. Esta investigacin destaca la importancia de reconocer la perspectiva social que los propios cirujas tienen de su actividad. Son los actores vinculados al negocio del reciclado ms desfavorecidos social y econmicamente. Centramos la exposicin en las experiencias significativas de la cotidianidad, y los testimonios de los propios cirujas y cartoneros. Se analizan distintos sentidos otorgados al cirujeo: forma de vidacirujas estructurales, y de estrategia de supervivencianuevos cirujas. Otra distincin, en funcin de su dedicacin: exclusiva, parcial u ocasional. La cooperativizacin de la actividad informal constituye una posibilidad de normativizar y mejorar las condiciones laborales para tales trabajadores.
