En Uruguay, a partir de la dcada del 30 y hasta mediados del 50 se desarroll el modelo industrial sustitutivo de importaciones. El cambio en la estructura productiva tuvo sus consecuencias en el mercado de trabajo impulsado por el rol protector del Estado, fundamentalmente con el advenimiento del neobatllismo. Se impuls la legislacin laboral y social creando los tripartitos Consejos de Salarios como escenario del Sistema de Relaciones Laborales. El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en analizar la evolucin del salario real, durante las dos primeras rondas de los Consejos de Salarios tanto en su nivel general como para las diferentes calificaciones en la industria de la carne, del cuero y fabricacin de calzado, de la alimentacin y afines, qumica, del caucho y grfica. El resultado obtenido es la constatacin del aumento del salario real en todos los grupos, excepto en la industria del caucho donde se presume que el poder sindical era menor. Adems existi una correlacin positiva entre el nivel de calificacin y el salario. La discriminacin de gnero sigui hacindose efectiva mediante salarios y categoras diferenciadas entre mujeres y hombres.
