En cuanto tal, ha impregnado casi todas las manifestaciones de la vida poltica y cultural del pas. Ideologa en crisis desde hace algunos aos, no ha dejado, sin embargo, de gravitar sobre la conciencia colectiva. Y muestra cmo estos se localizan en los principales temas del patriotismo criollo, consecuencia del sentimiento antiespaol de la clase criolla al verse a menudo relegada de los puestos pblicos por peninsulares. Entre esos temas se encuentran la revivificacin del pasado indgena y la exaltacin de ciertos elementos de la religin, concretamente el gudalupanismo, que algunos idelogos, de entre los cuales destacan fray Servando Teresa de Mier y Carlos Mara Bustamante, transforman en la retrica del nacionalismo mexicano. Brading examina tambin el relativo fracaso de este protonacionalismo, que no logr encontrar un amplio apoyo despus de la Independencia, a la luz de un anlisis de la ideologa y la composicin del liberalismo mexicano y su rechazo del pasado indgena y colonial. De tal manera, el nacionalismo del a Revolucin aparece como un rescate y revalorizacin de los principales mitos y temas creados al calor de la lucha por la Independencia.
