Brading examina tambin el relativo fracaso de este protonacionalismo, que no logr encontrar un amplio apoyo despus de la Independencia, a la luz de un anlisis de la ideologa y la composicin del liberalismo mexicano y su rechazo del pasado indgena y colonial.
