El principal objeto de estudio de este libro es el altepetl, o pueblo de indios, que fue la unidad poltica fundamental de los habitantes del Mxico central desde tiempos prehispnicos hasta mediados de la poca colonial. El nalisis de sus caractersiticas y su evolucin, especialmente compleja en vista de las transformaciones que impuso la dominacin espaola, se entreteje en esta pginas con la narrativa del desarrollo de los pueblos en una zona en particular, que es en trminos generales la que hoy se conoce como Sierra Norte de Puebla. Esta fascinante historia de una treintena de pequeos estados semiautnomos, pues tal cosa fueron los pueblos, refleja fielmente muchos de los rasgos fundamentales de la vida de los indios y del desarrollo de algunas regiones novohispanas en los siglos XVI y XVII.
