The book illustrates the autobiographical elements in the works of D.H Lawrence. Lawrence at various points of his life was influenced by women he had associations with namely Lydia Lawrence (his mother), Freida Lawrence(his wife), Jessie Chambers, Louie Burrows, Helen Corke, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Brett, Blanche Jennings and Alice Dax. This book analyses the inspiration of some of these women on the works of Lawrence by drawing similarities between women characters in his works like Miriam, Ursula, Kate, Clara and others to their real life counterparts. The book takes not only the help of literary works of Lawrence but also letters written by him to the above mentioned women. The book establishes an essential observation that the association between Lawrence and the women in his life proved symbiotic, in terms of intellectual and literary skills. Taking into account Eliot's theory of impersonality, the book also raises a question: Can literary works be entirely objective?
