The emotional state of love, the physical act of sex and the social institution of marriage were central issues of medieval life. Conor McCarthy brings together a wide array of writings as well as informative introductions and explanations, to give a vivid impression of how love, sex and marriage were discussed at the time.Included are extracts from literary and theological works, medical and legal writings, conduct books, chronicles and letters. They range from wellknown texts such as the letters of Abelard and Heloise, Beowulf and the Canterbury Tales to less familiar sources such as Church legislation or court proceedings. The breadth of material shows the diverse and sometimes disparate approaches to love, sex and marriage in medieval culture and illustrates contemporary attitudes and ideologies. The collection includes some material available in Modern English for the first time.

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with this book. The title sounded promising, but it was more of a textbook than a casual read. It arrived in good condition, but I just couldn’t get into it. Wouldn't recommend for casual readers.

Engaging but a Bit Dry
While I enjoyed some sections of this book, others felt a bit dry and academic. I was hoping for more engaging storytelling. It covers a lot of ground, but I sometimes felt lost in the details.

Good Read but Lacks Depth
This book has some interesting points about marriage in the Middle Ages, but I expected a bit more detail. It’s a decent overview but doesn’t explore certain aspects as deeply as I hoped. Still, it’s worth a read if you're curious about the topic.

Fascinating Insights into Medieval Life
I bought this book for my history-loving partner, and they can't put it down! The way it dives into love and marriage customs of the Middle Ages is so intriguing. Highly recommend if you're into social history.
