Il fut le premier biologiste franais adopter d'emble le nodarwinisme, dans une France lamarckiste, hostile au courant darwinien anglosaxon. Forte personnalit, libre penseur, grande figure de la vie scientifique et universitaire franaise, Lucien Cunot fut l'un des pionniers de la gntique l'chelle internationale en participant la redcouverte des lois de Mendel chez la souris en 1902. Mais ce naturaliste refusa d'adhrer pleinement la thorie synthtique de l'volution telle qu'elle fut labore dans les pays anglosaxons au cours des annes 1940 : tax trop vite de finaliste, il fut aussitt occult aprs sa disparition. Cet ouvrage montre que pourtant la pense volutionniste de Lucien Cunot, fonde sur l'intuition naturaliste, prend dsormais tout son sens.
