Victor Hugo zhlt zu den bedeutendsten Autoren der europischen Literatur. Er gilt als Mitbegrnder der franzsischen Romantik und schuf mit Der Glckner von Notre Dame (1831) und Les Misrables (1862) zwei der berhmtesten Historienromane. In seinen Erzhlungen verarbeite er hufig die Kritik an den herrschenden Verhltnissen in Frankreich. So schrieb er in Les Misrables: "Eine Gesellschaft, die das Elend, eine Religion, die die Hlle, eine Humanitt, die den Krieg zulsst, erscheinen mir als minderwertige Gesellschaft, Religion und Humanitt". Auch als politischer Autor und Aktivist fand Hugo groen Zuspruch, wenngleich sich seine Position im Laufe der Jahre stark vernderte: Untersttze er zunchst noch royalistische Gruppierungen, machte er spter durch sozial engagierte und linksliberale Ideen auf sich aufmerksam und wurde aufgrund seiner Kritik an Napoleon III. 1851 sogar ins Exil gezwungen. Ungeachtet seiner streitbaren Positionen und den zum Teil sehr experimentellen und grotesken Elementen in seinen Werken, schaffte Hugo es schon zu Lebzeiten, die Massen fr sich zu begeistern. Er bte groen Einfluss auf nachfolgende Generationen von Schriftstellern aus und seine literarische Bedeutung reicht weit ber das 19. Jahrhundert hinaus. Mit Ausnahme der bekannten Werke wird er heute jedoch nur noch wenig gelesen, und viele seiner Texte sind leider nahezu in Vergessenheit geraten. Das Drama Lucretia Borgia beruht auf dem Leben der gleichnamigen italienischen Frstin, eine illegitime Tochter des spteren Papstes Alexander IV. Hugo zeichnet das Bild einer machthungrigen Frau, die von Gier und Rachsucht getrieben rcksichtslos ihre Ziele durchsetzt, schlielich aber an der Liebe zu ihrem Sohn zu zerbrechen droht. 1833 wurde das Stck in Paris uraufgefhrt. Es diente als literarische Vorlage fr die noch im selben Jahr von Gaetano Donizetti und Felice Romani auf die Bhne gebrachte italienische Oper. 1835 bersetze Georg Bchner Hugos Drama ins Deutsche.
