A partir del anlisis de las relaciones espaciotemporales en las novelas Un bel morir, Amrbar y La nieve del Almirante, y tomando como referencia el concepto Bajtiniano del cronotopo, as como algunas nociones de Las reglas del arte de Pierre Bourdieu, el presente trabajo hace una lectura crtica de la narrativa de lvaro Mutis. A lo largo de este recorrido crtico, salen a la luz los puntos ms contradictorios y problemticos que atraviesan la obra del escritor colombiano y la hacen tan compleja. Sobre dicha base terica, la autora establece un interesante deslinde de la propuesta esttica de Mutis y busca, en el aparente desarraigo de su personaje Maqroll el Gaviero, el origen de la visin pica posmoderna de la historia en la narrativa del escritor colombiano. De hecho, Maqroll encarna, valores epicreos hedonistas y libertarios, adems de postular la idea de la historia como un sinsentido ante el cual cabe solamente asumir libremente el propio destino, y, al mismo tiempo, anhela y elogia un mundo patriarcal desaparecido. A mitad de camino entre el epicuresmo y el prerromanticismo, Mutis presenta una visin de mundo indita; sntesis de una visin clsica y otra posmoderna.
