En 1932 une jeune femme russe Lydia D. arriva dans l'atelier de Matisse Nice, d'abord pour l'aider terminer La Danse pour la collection du docteur Barnes Philadelphie, avant de devenir son modle prfr pendant quatre ans puis par priodes jusqu'en 1954. Sa grce, sa beaut et sa personnalit permirent Matisse de raliser parmi ses plus beaux dessins de femme. Elle devint aussi le modle des peintures Le Rve, Blouse verte, La Verdure, Nu rose... Femme d'exception, elle fit don au muse Pouchkine de Moscou et au muse de l'Ermitage de SaintPtersbourg de tout ce qu'elle avait reu du peintre. L'ouvrage offre un regard indit sur l'oeuvre de Matisse, mais aussi sur la vie quotidienne l'atelier travers des tmoignages, des documents, des photographies et... les petits mots affectueux et enlumins de Matisse.
