In its concentration of interest upon the protagonists, Macbeth can be seen as Shakespeares experiment in unity of focus, whose chief appeal arises from the struggles of the central characters with each other and with the infernal powers that inspire or govern them. Over the centuries, the vision of directors like Welles, Nunn and Polanski, as well as the eloquent talents of actors like Garrick, Siddons, Olivier and McKellen have contributed to the central debate of the Who or what is culpable? Bernice W. Kliman, in her analysis of Macbeth in performance, examines major productions of the play on both stage and screen, thereby inviting the reader to contemplate directors and actors choices for what is arguably Shakespeares most compelling play.

The parallel text format is very useful, but I wish the binding was a bit sturdier. After a few readings, I’m worried it might fall apart. Still, the content is invaluable for understanding Macbeth better!

Useful but not perfect
This parallel text version is a good resource, but I found some of the footnotes lacking in detail. It’s still helpful for studying, especially with the side-by-side format, but I expected a bit more insight in the annotations. Worth having, though!

Great edition for analysis
As an English major, I appreciate having the original text next to the modern interpretation. This edition of Macbeth is well-organized and easy to use. I especially love how it breaks down complex passages!

Perfect for teaching Shakespeare
I got this for my high school English class, and it’s been a hit! The students find it easier to grasp the story with the modern text right there. It’s made discussions so much more engaging!

Not what I expected
I was really excited to receive this book, but when it arrived, the cover was a bit scuffed, and a few pages had some creasing. The content is alright, but I think I’ll look for another edition next time.
