Im Juni 1990 eskalierte in der Region Osch im Sden der Republik Kirgistan ein Streit um Ackerland in eine ethnisch gefrbte Auseinandersetzung zwischen Usbeken und Kirgisen. Durch den schnellen Einsatz sowjetischer Unionstruppen gelang es, nach wenigen Tagen den Frieden wieder herzustellen. Dennoch gab es Hunderte von Opfern zu beklagen und ein nachhaltig vergiftetes Klima zwischen den Bewohnern in der Gegend. Im Kontrast zu den 'Ereignissen von Osch' werden die 'Aksy Ereignisse' untersucht, jene Zusammenste zwischen Demonstranten und Milizkrften, bei denen im Mrz 2002 sechs Menschen ums Leben kamen. Ausgehend von Protesten ber die unrechtmige Inhaftierung eines lokalen Patrons spitzte sich nach einigen Wochen der Konflikt zwischen Staatsmacht und Volkswut zu, bis es in der Gegend um das Dorf Aksy zum tragischen Vorfall kam. In der Folgezeit sah sich das Regime von Prsident Akaev einer Welle von Demonstrationen gegenber, vermochte aber am Ende, allen Protest ins Leere laufen zu lassen. Nebst einer genauen Rekonstruktion der Konfliktverlufe interessiert aus analytischer Perspektive besonders das Verhltnis von Konfliktursachen und Konfliktfolgen. Gegen die allgemeine Lesart von ethnischen Animositten oder ClanWidersprchen wird gezeigt, dass planvolles Handeln und zielstrebige Konfliktfrderung im ersten Fall und nachhaltige Konfliktmanipulation im zweiten Fall immer den Interessen der Herrschenden dienten. Jenseits archaischer Strukturen werden so Herrschaftsmittel sichtbar gemacht, die als Instrument eines ausgeklgelten Systems der politischen Sicherung partikularistischer Interessen fungieren und weitaus moderner sind, als es ein erster Blick verm
