Eine Vielzahl technischer Anwendungen und Gerte beruhen auf den magnetischen Eigenschaften der benutzten Materialien. Die Bandbreite reicht von der Kompanadel bis hin zu modernen Datenspeichermedien. Die magnetischen Eigenschaften von Festkrpern sind heutzutage zu einem groen Teil untersucht und verstanden. Geht man jedoch zu mesoskopischen Systemen ber, so unterscheiden sich die Eigenschaften unter Umstnden deutlich von denen des ausgedehnten Festkrpers. Je mehr die Dimensionen oder die Geometrie eingeschrnkt werden, desto mehr weicht das Verhalten ab, da Oberflchen und Randeffekte dominierend werden. Dnne magnetische Filme mit einer Dicke von wenigen Monolagen, bzw. Schichtsysteme, die abwechselnd aus magnetischen und unmagnetischen Materialien bestehen, wurden bereits hinreichend untersucht. An diesen Multischichten fand man z.B. eine sehr starke Abhngigkeit des elektrischen Widerstandes vom angelegten Magnetfeld, den sogenannten Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR), der auf der Kopplung der magnetischen Schichten durch die unmagnetischen hindurch beruht. Auch Partikel mit einem Durchmesser von wenigen nm sind das Thema vieler Verffentlichungen, da ihre Eigenschaften aufgrund der reduzierten Gre sehr interessant sind. Zum Beispiel verhalten sich ferromagnetische Partikel in der Grenordnung < 50nm bei einer gewissen Temperatur TB pltzlich paramagnetisch, allerdings sind die Spins der einzelnen Atome immer noch korreliert, das magnetische Moment des ganzen Partikels beginnt zu fluktuieren. Man nennt diesen Effekt Superparamagnetismus, der bergang hngt lediglich von der Gre der Partikel und ihrer Wechselwirkung untereinander ab.
