This historical and critical account of modern Hebrew fiction surveys the work of twelve representative Hebrew writers work which began during the period of Jewish national renaissance in eastern Europe. Beginning with the naturalistic writings of Mendel Mokher Sefarim, the author follows the development of this literature to the late 1940s, when Hebrew fiction achieved its full height with the epic modernism of Haiyim Hazaz and S. Y. Agnon, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The chapters in this book, although they are divided into sections dealing with different authors, do, in fact, form complete and independent units. Some of these sections have appeared in literary journals in Israel but have been rewritten to form organic parts of the present work. The author includes biographical material on all the Hebrew writers discussed in the book. He also includes information on both Hebrew works and available translations.
