Why do some democratic governments succeed and others fail? In a book that has received attention from policymakers and civic activists in America and around the world, Robert Putnam and his collaborators offer empirical evidence for the importance of civic community in developing successful institutions. Their focus is on a unique experiment begun in 1970 when Italy created new governments for each of its regions. After spending two decades analyzing the efficacy of these governments in such fields as agriculture, housing, and health services, they reveal patterns of associationism, trust, and cooperation that facilitate good governance and economic prosperity.

I bought this thinking it would be a lighter read about Italian culture, but it turned out to be more academic. The focus on civic traditions is unique, but I was hoping for something more engaging. It’s useful for scholars, but not really for casual readers like me.

A Bit Dry but Informative
This book has some great information, but I found the writing a little dry. It's heavy on facts and can be hard to get through without a solid interest in the topic. That said, if you're looking to dive deep into civic traditions, this is a solid resource.

Insightful Read on Italian Democracy
I picked this book up to understand more about civic traditions in modern Italy, and it definitely delivered. The insights into how democracy functions in Italy were really eye-opening. It's well-researched and a bit dense at times, but worth it if you're interested in political science.
