En mil novecientos noventa y seis se propuso en el estado de Jalisco (Mxico) por parte de la Secretara de Agricultura, Ganadera, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentacin (SAGARPA) un proyecto de Desarrollo Rural Alternativo a travs del Manejo de Microcuencas. Este se basaba en la concurrencia institucional y el involucramiento de las poblaciones locales mediante el adecuado manejo de los recursos naturales, el desarrollo de alternativas de mejoramiento productivo y el incremento de la calidad de vida, manteniendo el funcionamiento de la cuenca como unidad ecosistmica. La Microcuenca Lagunillas (2,604 ha) localizada en el municipio de Atemajac de Brizuela y ubicada al sur del estado de Jalisco, fue la microcuenca piloto seleccionada para llevarlo a cabo. El presente estudio analiz los logros obtenidos, los errores cometidos y los retos pendientes durante nueve aos de gestin de la microcuenca (19972005), considerando, adems de la eficiencia de los programas, proyectos y acciones implementadas, el papel de las instituciones, autoridades y comunidad local en el proceso.
