This is the Official catalogue of the important 1983 Manet Centennial Exhibition that appeared at the Met from September 10th November 27, 1983. This Manet Centennial Exhibition honored the 100th year of his death in 1883. The exhibition had originated at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris from April 22th thru August 8, 1983. Insightful and very informative, the text explores Manet's pictorial language, his relationship with the Impressionism (Manet & Degas were older than the group), and Manet's work in print, his letters to Emile Zola and much more. An excellent read, really a mustread for any serious student of Manet or 19th Paris. Filled with beautiful color and black & white reproductions of his work. Finally, book provides a map of Manet's Paris, the galleries, exhibition sites, the cafes, studios, his birthplace & apartments plus an excellent Chronolgy, list of exhibitions, bibliography of works cited in text, appendix featuring documents relating to the 'Maximilian Affair.' If you have one book on Manet, this should be it.
