Since World War II, many efforts towards contextual Asian Christian Theologies have been made. But how truly contextual are these? Theology and mission are inseparable, and a truly contextual theology is one which empowers the church in mission. This study applies four criteria to representative examples of Protestant Asian theology to assess their adequacy or otherwise as contextual and missiological theologies. These criteria are: relevance to sociopolitical context, enhancing the churches evangelistic and pastoral ministries, inculturation, and faithfulness to the Christian tradition.
