Comme tout le monde, j'ai t fascine par cette effervescence perptuelle. Mais comment crire l'histoire de ce qui ne dure pas ? De ce qui ne vit que dans la mtamorphose ? Je me suis avance dans ce fougueux dsordre en essayant de comprendre la magie d'un lieu qui a su faire vivre ensemble des paysans irlandais et des siciliens, des juifs chapps de leurs ghettos et des savants perscuts, d'anciens esclaves et des hommes hants par le got de la libert. Trs vite, je me suis trouve en face d'un dlire de pierre et d'acier o la rigueur gomtrique des formes n'tait que le masque d'une joyeuse confusion. Trs vite, j'ai vu que la loi de Manhattan, c'est l'phmre, le discordant, c'est le sublime et la laideur devenus complices, c'est le brassage des langues et des races que tente une humanit lance la poursuite de son salut.
