The extent to which seventeenthcentury aesthetics imbues the narrative of Alessandro Manzoni's nineteenthcentury historical novel I Promessi sposi is examined in this book. After some consideration on how literary texts of the period show Manzoni's willingness to "consult" the century literarily, a discussion of his knowledge and understanding of seventeenthcentury aesthetics leads to the conclusion that he was willing to, and did, consult dramatic and artistic "texts" of that century as well.
