Der Siebzehnjhrige begann ein intensives Wanderleben, das ihn durch ganz Europa, Nord und Sdamerika fhren sollte. Eine Ausbildung als Missionskaufmann ermglichte ihm die Begegnung mit Indien; im frhen 20. Jahrhundert erlebte er die Vielfalt neuer knstlerischer Strmungen in der Mnchner Bohme. Im Ersten Weltkrieg arbeitete Bonsels als Kriegsberichterstatter und lie sich dann in Ambach am Starnberger See nieder. Der berwltigende Erfolg seiner Natur und Tiermrchen Die Biene Maja und ihre Abenteuer (1912) und Himmelsvolk (1915) berdeckt sein weiteres schriftstellerisches Schaffen mit Werken wie beispielsweise dem aus eigenem Erleben schpfenden Bericht Indienfahrt (1916), den Werken der MarioTrilogie (1937 abgeschlossen), den autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen Tage der Kindheit (1931) oder dem Hauptwerk seiner Sptzeit, dem ChristusRoman Dositos (1942). Waldemar Bonsels starb 1952 in Ambach.
