Kings Vision der Integration stand Malcolm X' Idee des Separatismus gegenber, und das macht sie zu hchstinteressanten Kandidaten fr die GegenspielerReihe des Fischer Verlages. In der reihentypischen Gegeneinanderstellung der beiden Lebenslufe offenbaren sich Parallelitten und Gegenstze. Beide erlebten Rassismus hautnah, beide waren stark durch ihren Glauben beeinflusst, beide wollten endlich Gerechtigkeit fr die Farbigen, und beide starben durch Attentate im Alter von 39 Jahren. Aber als King Mitte der Vierziger Jahre sein Universittsstudium begann, sa Malcolm Little (so X' Geburtsname) wegen Einbruchdiebstahl in einer Gefngniszelle. Als King 1948 Baptistenpfarrer wurde, konvertierte Little zum Islam. Whrend King mit friedlichen Mitteln wie einem Busboykott arbeitete, belagerte Malcolm X eine Polizeiwache oder rief zur Bewaffnung der Schwarzen auf. Erst spt nherte sich Malcolm X den Visionen Kings an, doch da beendeten Gewehrkugeln die Leben der beiden. WaldschmidtNelsons dichte Arbeit geht ber die reinen Biografien hinaus, sie erlutert sowohl kurz die Vorgeschichte der Schwarzen in den USA als auch den spteren Umgang mit dem Erbe von King und X.
