herzog (seit 1623 auch Kurfrst) Maximilian I. von Bayern (15731651) zhlt zu den herausragenden Reichsfrsten in der deutschen Geschichte der Frhen Neuzeit, zugleich ist er der bedeutendste Wittelsbacher neben Kaiser Ludwig dem Bayern und Knig Ludwig I. Im Rahmen der groen Zeitstrmungen von Konfessionalisierung, Gegenreformation und Grundlegung des frhmodernen Staates hat er im Laufe einer fnfzigjhrigen Regierung in beachtlichem Ausma auf die deutschen und europischen Verhltnisse seiner Zeit eingewirkt. In den skularen Gegenstzen zwischen Katholizismus und Protestantismus sowie zwischen den Husern Habsburg und Bourbon hat er in entschiedener Weise Stellung bezogen und zum Ergebnis dieser Auseinandersetzungen, wie sie im Westflischen Frieden 1648 fixiert wurden, nicht unerheblich beigetragen. Durch Politk, Konfessionspolitik und Kulturfrderung hat er Land und Volk in Bayern mehr als bisher mit dem romanischen Kulturkreis verbunden und ist dadurch zu einem der Vter der bayerischen Barockkultur geworden.
