In den skularen Gegenstzen zwischen Katholizismus und Protestantismus sowie zwischen den Husern Habsburg und Bourbon hat er in entschiedener Weise Stellung bezogen und zum Ergebnis dieser Auseinandersetzungen, wie sie im Westflischen Frieden 1648 fixiert wurden, nicht unerheblich beigetragen. Durch Politk, Konfessionspolitik und Kulturfrderung hat er Land und Volk in Bayern mehr als bisher mit dem romanischen Kulturkreis verbunden und ist dadurch zu einem der Vter der bayerischen Barockkultur geworden.
