Le cuivre est un lment chimique, nocif pour la matire vivante, qui peut s'associer sous de nombreuses formes aux constituants organiques et inorganiques des sols. A une chelle macroscopique, les modlisations thermodynamiques, sont insuffisantes pour conclure sur la nature des formes prsentes. La spectroscopie d'absorption X permet d'accder cette information. A cette chelle micromtrique, la variabilit spcifique des formes du cuivre d'un point d'analyse un autre se traduit par un changement du signal mesur. L'Analyse en Composantes Principales (ACP) permet alors en thorie de dnombrer les espces pures. Ces techniques ont t utilises pour caractriser les formes cuprifres d'une part dans des rizires contamines par une exploitation minire et d'autre part dans un bassin d'infiltration d'eaux de ruissellement. Les prsences de cuivre associ avec la matire organique et sous formes de cristaux localement spcifiques ont t mises en vidence. Mais, en raison de la faible fiabilit des indicateurs existants, le nombre total des espces n'a pu tre que major par ACP. Ce problme a t surmont par la mise au point d'un nouvel indicateur valu statistiquement.
