Si de nombreuses enqutes sociologiques ont mis en vidence une relation entre milieu social, consommation de mdicaments et comportements l'gard de la sant, peu d'tudes ont t consacres aux variations existant dans une mme catgorie sociale. A partir d'une observation ethnologique de plusieurs annes dans divers services hospitaliers, au domicile des malades, Sylvie Fainzang s'interroge sur l'observance, l'automdication, la perception des mdicaments ou les relations des patients l'gard des mdecins. Elle montre que les comportements face l'autorit mdicale portent l'empreinte de l'origine culturelle et de l'histoire des malades. On s'interroge beaucoup actuellement sur la consommation des mdicaments et sur les conduites envers la sant. La sociologie a mis en vidence l'influence du milieu social sur les comportements individuels, mais on connait mal les variations existant au sein d'une mme catgorie sociale.
