Nacido en Bucarest en 1907, estudi filosofa oriental en la India, y fue luego profesor en la Universidad de Bucarest y figura central de la llamada joven generacin, a la que pertenecieron tambin Cioran y Ionesco, que dinamiz la vida cultural de Rumana. En 1956 se estableci en Chicago, en cuya Universidad ense historia de las religiones hasta su fallecimiento en 1986. Sus obras de historia de las religiones son consideradas una autoridad.
