Louis de Rouvroy, duc de SaintSimon, fut l'un des favoris de la cour de Louis XIV. Grand seigneur, il eut le privilge de loger Versailles et d'y observer les intrigues de palais. Durant plus de trente ans, SaintSimon va tre l'historiographe du roi et de la cour. Ses Mmoires, oeuvre colossale de plusieurs milliers de pages, ne sont pas une entreprise autobiographique, il s'agit en fait d'une gigantesque fresque historiographique. Le titre des Mmoires est trompeur. SaintSimon en avertit son lecteur: "Je ne parle pas du coeur, dont ce n'est pas ici le lieu. (...) Ces Mmoires ne sont pas faits pour y parler de moi." Il prcise : "J'cris une histoire particulire (...) celle du temps et du pays o on vit." Une histoire donc et non une autobiographie : les Mmoires sont rdigs la premire personne, mais une personne se postant discrte et anonyme, comme une camra cache, dans les couloirs de Versailles et les alles de son jardin. De l, on assiste, spectateur combl, voyeur patent, au dfil impressionnant des courtisans intresss et aux tableaux vivants des gens de cour. la mort du Grand Dauphin en 1712, SaintSimon se plat "croquer" tout ce beau monde qui "mditait profondment aux suites d'un vnement si peu attendu, et bien davantage sur euxmmes". Tels sont les Mmoires de SaintSimon, drles, vivants, scrutateurs, une somme incomparable sur les moeurs politiques du temps que renferme un trait de morale caustique sur la fatuit ternelle de l'homme.
