Porfirio Daz escribi estas Memorias, contando su vida entera desde su nacimiento hasta julio de 1867. En ellas reserva el primer captulo a sus antepasados. Se incluyen, adems, trece aos de sus aventuras militares, hasta el momento en que fue candidato a las elecciones presidenciales de su pas, por primera vez. Porfirio Daz fue un lder mexicano que desarroll una intensa actividad militar y poltica durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Particip en dos conflictos blicos: la guerra de Reforma (18581861); y la guerra contra el Segundo Imperio Mexicano (18631867). Se rebel contra el gobierno federal en dos ocasiones: la primera contra el presidente Benito Jurez, en 1871; y, posteriormente, contra Sebastin Lerdo de Tejada, en 1876. Porfirio Daz fue cuatro veces gobernador de Oaxaca y nueve veces presidente de Mxico, entre 1876 y 1911. Su larga gestin de gobierno ha sido motivo de controversia: unos historiadores resaltan el crecimiento econmico sin precedentes que registr la economa mexicana bajo su mandato; otros ponen el foco en su autoritarismo, la manipulacin electoral y la expropiacin de los ejidos, que conden a los indgenas a vivir en la pobreza y la indigencia. La figura de Porfirio es clave en la historia mexicana: polmica, aclamada y cuestionada por igual.
