From School Library Journal Grade 36These books start with a definition and then jump from topic to topic using lengthy descriptions of how the product is made from raw materials, types of manufacturing, and the variety of end results. The need to recycle, changes from the early development to the present, and future needs are addressed. The texts are dry and are unlikely to draw in readers. The photos and drawings are helpful, but the variety in font size and blurbs of information make it difficult to navigate through the plethora of information. Confusing clutter with a mixture of glimpses from the past and ideas for the future are all thrown in among the pages. No pronunciation guides are provided in the texts or short glossaries. A plus is the list of keywords to search for on the Web. It's unlikely that most collections will need these titles.Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description Discusses how metals are created, extracted, and worked and looks at the uses of metal in the past, present, and future, including artificially produced metal and metal from outer space.
